Resources for Immigrant Families
Dear Parents and Community Members,
We understand that some members of our community may have questions and concerns regarding immigration status and the impact of federal immigration policies on their lives and loved ones. Please rest assured that the Luther Burbank School District staff and Board of Trustees are dedicated to welcoming, protecting, educating, and supporting all students.
As a reflection of our community and a source of critical information, we are committed to collaborating with our educational partners to provide a safe environment where all students can grow in mind, body, and spirit. Recognizing the challenges some families are facing, we are sharing valuable information from the California State Government, the Santa Clara County Office of Education, and local community partners who offer resources for our immigrant families.
State laws and district policies provide essential protections for students and families. On January 6, 2025, California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued two sets of guidance to uphold the educational rights of immigrant students and their families:
Educational Rights and Protections: Immigrant students have the right to a free public education, and their personal information is protected by confidentiality laws.
Compliance with Immigration Enforcement Laws: This guidance helps school officials understand and comply with state laws that limit participation in immigration enforcement activities, including handling requests for information or access from immigration agents.
If immigration enforcement officers visit a school, they will only be granted access under specific legal circumstances, such as presenting a valid judicial warrant. Confidential information, including immigration or citizenship details, will not be shared unless legally required, in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
This page includes resources such as recorded webinars, Rapid Response Network support, and access to free legal resources. We will continue updating these resources to ensure our families receive the support they need.
